During the COVID pandemic, Jora Singh found himself spending many more hours on the computer — his classes initially moved online, he had started to teach himself how to code. After a while, he noticed he was having wrist pain and back pain from the long hours at the keyboard. He started thinking of solutions.

“I have a huge passion for science, and I’ve been doing science fair projects since I was in grade four,” says Jora Singh, who recently finished grade nine.

This led to him developing a hands-free app for using your computer, DeviceABLE. Developed over the last year using his self-taught coding skills, DeviceABLE allows you to use head and facial movements to move your cursor, as well as use an onscreen keyboard. There’s also a voice feature for people who can’t use as much neck or head movement.

We covered plenty of learning apps in the past, but here we are again! The truth is there are SO MANY learning apps out there, and what works best for one student may not work for the other. The learning app that we are looking at today has been around for over a decade, and it’s currently topping a lot of “must have” lists around the internet.

SplashLearn is an education app that was designed for students from pre-K to grade 5. With over 4,000 learning games that cover math, reading, and writing, your child will have lots of unique learning opportunities. But, you won’t be finding yourself struggling to figure out what’s next, because SplashLearn offers daily learning plans. The app also has users set up a “profile” for their child during the initial set up, so you’ll be properly guided through this experience from the very start.

Mathway is a problem-solving app designed to not only solve math equations but to also explain the steps required to arrive at the correct answer. This can be especially helpful for students who are learning at home, for those who do not have access to a tutor, or even for adults who simply wish to check their math. Whatever the case may be, math apps such as the one we’re looking at today are invaluable tools for those who struggle with math, as they allow learners to double check their answers as well as their methodology.

Neil Squire Society to Empower Students with Disabilities through Assistive Technology in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan

Neil Squire Solutions will be providing assistive technology support to students and teachers at the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, with a focus on helping students with disabilities transition from school to post-secondary education/training or employment.

Solutions will be reviewing and assessing the current teaching strategies at six schools in the region, with an eye to improving learning for students with disabilities. They will assist teachers in investigating and demonstrating the use of assistive technology in their classrooms, and they will support students with disabilities in the use of technological supports to maximize their learning. Solutions will provide professional development training in the use of text-to speech software, word prediction software, and organizational tools.
