National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Today we honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
Today is also Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to signify that “Every Child Matters.” The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.
Neil Squire is committed to understanding the truths of our shared history, to accept and learn from it and in turn we are determined to contribute to the creation of a better, more inclusive Canada.
Neil Squire staff across Canada are encouraged to reflect on the day and take part in local ceremonies.
