Learning Ally: Audiobooks for Students

A kid sits down at a table with books and pencils on it, and uses a tablet.

For students with dyslexia or other print disabilities, reading books and textbooks in the classroom can present a big barrier to their progress. However, audiobooks and other audio-based tools are a good way to mitigate these issues. Enter Learning Ally. This app/service was designed to offset print-based barriers by providing struggling readers with an alternative way to access curriculum content as well as a wide range of literature.

Learning Ally is an audiobook app that provides a large library of human-read textbooks, bestsellers, and classic literature. It provides built-in features such as highlighted text alongside audio narration, note-taking, bookmarking, speed control, and the ability to highlight any word or passage you want.

For students in the Pre-K to Grade 2 range, Learning Ally provides a specialized e-library of children’s books. This program, called Excite Reading, also offers corresponding book guides for teachers so that they can ensure that class discussions are in line with the curriculum.

Learning Ally also offers training and other learning and engagement opportunities for teachers. Every year they host the Spotlight on Dyslexia Virtual Conference, which is attended by thousands of educators and literacy advocates every year. This conference provides a mix of practical strategies, discussions around theory and best practices, and inspirational stories.

They also provide an array of professional learning programs and training for teachers including Dyslexia Awareness Training, Structured Literacy in Action, Learning Ally Audiobook Solution Workshop, Excite Reading Workshop, and the Supporting Striving Readers at Home session.

Needless to say, Learning Ally is a lot more than just an app, since most literacy apps simply provide the tool and let the teacher figure out the training and implementation. With the amount of training and support provided, the higher than usual price of the app makes a lot more sense.

Learning Ally costs about $185 CDN per year, but for applicants who cannot afford the cost of membership, you can apply to have that fee waived through their assistance program. To learn more, click here.

*Please note that this app is available in English only. However, second language learning books are available.
