WorkBC Assistive Technology Services Puts Tom on the Path to Employment

A job seeker uses a phone and circles job ads in the newspaper using a red marker.

Tom is currently looking for work. He has Central Sensitization Syndrome and widespread chronic pain, making it difficult for him to work.

“It severely limits the amount of time I am able to spend up and about, including time spent sitting at a desk. Since 2021, I have been unable to work because of my condition,” he explains.

His WorkBC Employment Consultant referred him to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services for help.

ATS has made a world of difference for me. I received a reclining and highly adjustable motorized office chair, which allows me to adjust my position as frequently as my pain requires. This item alone has opened up for me the possibility of returning to work,” Tom says.

He also received Dragon Naturally Speaking, which allows him to use his computer with voice commands instead of always needing to type, as well as training in how to use Dragon.

“I have struggled with chronic muscle spasms in my shoulders and neck due to computer use, and this software has allowed me to reduce my keyboard and mouse input by at least 75%,” he shares.

“All in all, I am extremely grateful and excited to get working again with my new equipment! This program has honestly been a life changer for me. And it’s not just because of the equipment. Getting to work with the occupational therapist was so helpful. I had already tried everything I could think of, but she had great ideas and valuable insights. It was also really validating to have someone take the time to really understand my struggle, and to help me take steps forward.”

Tom says he “absolutely” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others.

“I was stuck unemployed and unemployable. Now, I am able to spend a decent amount of time working at my computer,” he explains. “The equipment and software I received have made all the difference between not able to work, and ready to apply for jobs. I have already applied for some and hopefully I’ll be working soon!”

“This is an awesome program,” he continues. “Thanks again to everyone who worked with me in this program. I am so grateful for the difference it’s made in my life.”
