WorkBC Assistive Technology Services “Made a Significant Difference in My Ability to Perform My Job Effectively and Safely”

Ihor came to Vancouver about a year ago as a displaced Ukrainian. He soon found work as a prep cook and dishwasher at a local Ukrainian restaurant, taking pride in his new job. However, he was recently diagnosed with hearing loss in both ears and tinnitus, which was making his job more difficult.

“I work in a loud and noisy environment filled with all sorts of equipment,” he shares. “My main concerns include my inability to hear people, even in a quiet environment, and follow their instructions, not being able to hear if the dishwasher is on or off, if water is overflowing in the bucket, if the alarm system is on or off, if the work equipment is working or not.”

Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, he received funding for the hearing aids he needs for work.

“Since receiving employment-related disability support through the Assistive Technology Services program, my productivity at work has improved significantly. With the hearing aids funded by the program, I can now hear instructions clearly, monitor the dishwasher and other equipment effectively, and stay aware of my surroundings in the noisy kitchen environment and during my commute,” he says.

“This has enhanced my ability to perform my duties as a prep cook and dishwasher, ensuring a more efficient and safe work experience. Overall, the support has greatly increased my confidence and productivity at work.”

Ihor particularly praises the service he received from WorkBC Assistive Technology Services staff.

“I would highly recommend the Assistive Technology Services program to others. The process was smooth and seamless; once I provided the necessary documentation and had an interview with my case manager, the funding was available to me in no time. I felt heard and understood throughout the entire process. The program made a significant difference in my ability to perform my job effectively and safely,” he explains.

“I am immensely grateful for the outstanding services provided by the Assistive Technology Services program and, in particular, the exceptional work of my case manager. From the beginning, [they were] incredibly thoughtful, kind, and perceptive, making me feel truly understood. Despite my inexperience with hearing aids, [they] guided me with expertise and empathy, clearly having a deep understanding of cases like mine. [They] directed me to the best places to purchase high-quality hearing aids and ensured I received the optimal devices for my needs. [Their] compassion, excellent communication skills, and prompt responses made the entire process seamless.”
