WorkBC Assistive Technology Services Helps Tamara Make Her Workday Easier
Tamara works as a receptionist in Port Moody, answering the phones, booking appointments, and opening and closing the office. She has fibromyalgia, arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic pain, and learning difficulties.
“[I] can’t sit or stand for too long. Repetitive tasks cause pain and cramping,” she shares. “[My] reading and writing are very weak. I have got to go to school to help, but I learn a different way.”
She learned about WorkBC Assistive Technology Service from her boss and decided to apply.
Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, Tamara received assistance with identifying assistive technology to help overcome her barriers in the workplace. Together with her employer and WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, she was provided with an ergonomic chair, headset, Read&Write, and Grammarly software. She also received training on the Read&Write and Grammarly software to support her reading and writing skills for work.
“They helped me find ways, choices, and tools to make work life easier,” she explains. “The computer programs help me with my grammar and spelling, and can read out sections that would normally frustrate me so I can understand. The chair helps with my hip, back, and arms.”
The accommodations have made a big difference in Tamara’s workday.
“I have more comfort in writing. I can sit for longer periods of time without pain,” she says.
Tamara says she recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, particularly praising the staff.
“They were very helpful,” she shares. “They went over how to use the devices and answered all my questions.”
WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
