Robert is a self-employed civil engineer, contracted to undertake project work by local governments. He works from his home office in Courtenay, but also travels to various work sites and client offices.

He has adult onset limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, and has been using a power wheelchair full time for over five years.

With the travel that his work requires, Robert needs a wheelchair accessible van — a big expense.

He applied and was quickly approved.

“ATS funded the majority of my vehicle modifications, including an accessible van with power ramp, wheelchair securement, custom driver seat, and hand controls,” he shares. “All my contacts with ATS have been very positive. Staff are very competent and helpful and processed my file very quickly.”

Robert is quite pleased with the new van.

“My new wheelchair accessible van is crucial to my work. I would not be able to work without my vehicle,” he says.

He “absolutely” recommends Assistive Technology Services to others in need, and has already referred people he knows to the program.

“My life has been greatly improved by ATS. I now have high quality transportation which has improved my quality of life and enabled me to continue operating my small engineering business for many years to come.”
