Randy Continues His Meaningful Work Thanks to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services
“Retirement was not for me, but I did not have necessary technology to enable me to be productive,” says Randy, who is blind.
Randy is a founding board member of the One in Spirit Healing Arts Society, a non-profit society facilitating transformative healing moments, rooted in First Nations teachings. He recently started work as the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Elder-in-Residence for the Nanaimo campus of Vancouver Island University, a job he credits WorkBC Assistive Technology Services helping him to get.
He had heard about the program on the radio and decided to apply.
Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, Randy received Microsoft Office, REAPER audio recording and editing software, Eltrinex Talking Digital Voice Recorder, Snowball External Microphone, as well as training.
A long-time storyteller, Randy has been using the audio equipment and software to record stories and develop them into podcasts and booklets for his organizations.
“The equipment and software enabled me to immediately become productive,” he shares. “Without your assistance I would never have been able to launch projects with One in Spirit. Also, the connections I was able to make through recording stories led to my being hired by Vancouver Island University. I know that with One in Spirit and VIU, your assistance has greatly aided in my career advancement.
“The assistance provided also equipped me to be able to apply for grants and secure paid contracts. This has totally improved my life by enabling me to be productive in very positive projects. I am now dedicating the remainder of my days to listening to people’s stories and sharing my own, knowing that stories can be healing.”
Randy “most definitely” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others.
“I thank you very much,” he says. “It feels very satisfying to be able to earn a meaningful living and being a taxpayer again.”
WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
