“I Did Not Realize How Much I Was Missing,” Julia Stays in Tune With New Hearing Aids
Julia works as a private singing teacher in Langley for students aged six years and older. Working with students on their vocal technique and providing constructive criticism and feedback, hearing is vital to what she does.
However, she is hard of hearing.
“Without hearing aids, I would be quite ineffective at my job. Singing is something I have learned to be able to do with or without my hearing aids,” Julia shares. “But in order to properly hear another person sing and effectively correct any issues I hear, I absolutely need my assistive technology.”
Needing new hearing aids, her audiologist at the Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility (new window) recommended she check out WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.
Julia applied to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, and quickly found herself approved for funding for a new set of hearing aids, “almost entirely” covering the cost.
“I did not realize how much I was missing until I made the switch. The different options for settings also allow me to make adjustments to suit the needs of that moment,” she explains.
“Since receiving my new hearing aids, I am so much more confident when communicating with others. At work, I am able to listen and teach in much greater detail — to the point that I’ll often surprise students with how much I can pick up on.”
Julia “absolutely” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others in need.
“Assistive Technology Services program has given me access to a quality of equipment that I would have not been able to afford on my own. I was long overdue to replace my previous pair, but I had no idea how I’d be able to afford new ones. When I started my application to this program, I was using a back-up pair that belonged to my late Grandmother because mine had completely stopped working.”
WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
