“I Am Able to Continue Working Now and Supporting Myself”
Joan works at a customer service desk in a retail store.
“My job is quite physical and involves a lot of lifting and a lot of moving around the store,” she says. “I have a spinal cord injury at the L1 level. I do not walk at all and use a wheelchair for my mobility. My shoulders, arms, wrists and hands where often in a lot of pain by the end of a shift due to overuse. Getting into my van after a shift was often very painful.”
Joan learned about WorkBC Assistive Technology Services from Alliance Mobility Solutions, and decided to apply.
Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, Joan received funding for vehicle modifications, including hand controls, a steering wheel spinner knob, a wheelchair lift, and a transfer seat. As well, she received SmartDrive MX2 + PushTracker, which makes it easier for her to move in her wheelchair throughout the day.
“This equipment has been a gamechanger for me,” Joan explains. “I have now been able to complete a full shift with minimal pain in my shoulders and arms. Getting into my van after my shift is so much easier and I am in much less pain.”
The new equipment has made a big difference in Joan’s workday.
“I am able to do a better job at work,” she says. “All of the equipment is keeping my shoulders from having to work so hard. I believe that receiving this equipment has extended the health life of my shoulders and arms. My quality of life has improved and I am grateful for that!
“I would totally recommend [WorkBC Assistive Technology Services] to others,” she continues. “Thank you so much to the people at Work BC Assistive Technology Services! I would have never been able to afford the equipment you provided. I am able to continue working now and supporting myself.”
WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
