Balance Returns to Fiona’s Life
Fiona is a professional engineer in Kelowna, creating software programs that automatically run the machines in industrial plants. She also designs the graphical interfaces for the plant operators to start machines and monitor measurements such as temperatures and pressures within pipes and vessels.
“Creating the software requires a lot of design meetings with customers, equipment manufacturers and colleagues so that we get the details correct for successful and safe automated operation,” she explains.
Communication is key. However, Fiona has moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears.
“[It] impacts my ability to hear in meetings, whether in person, online or by phone, and generally limits my ability to participate in office socializing as it is difficult to communicate in large groups,” she shares.
Her audiologist referred her to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.
“The ATS program provided funding for new hearing aids that have streaming technology, so that I can directly stream phone calls and online meetings to my hearing aids rather than struggle to hear through my phone or computer speakers.”
The hearing aids have made a big difference in Fiona’s work, and her day-to-day life.
“Since receiving the new hearing aids, I am able to hear 95% of what is said during meetings and phone calls, whereas with my old hearing aids I feel I was only catching 60%. I am also more relaxed, mentally and physically, as I was always so exhausted straining to catch all the details and worrying I’d missed something important. My body would be tense as well, as I was on edge and stressed all the time,” Fiona says.
“I feel that balance has returned to my life, as I am no longer spending my after-work hours trying to wind down from the strain and stress of my work day communications. I am relaxed at work and I can enjoy my downtime in the evenings.”
The new hearing aids have really changed Fiona’s life.
“I would highly recommend the ATS program, I am so grateful for the funding I received and even more grateful for the way this new hearing aid technology has changed my life for the better.”
